Description
Catharanthus roseus, commonly known as Madagascar Periwinkle or Vinca, is a popular ornamental and medicinal plant originally native to Madagascar. It is a hardy, evergreen flowering plant that is widely cultivated around the world.
It forms a low-growing, bushy plant with glossy green leaves and produces an abundance of attractive, five-petalled flowers in shades of pink, white, red, and bi-colours. Its long flowering period and tolerance of heat make it a popular choice for gardens, pots, and landscaping in warm climates.
This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it is adaptable to a range of soil types. Catharanthus roseus is drought tolerant once established and performs well in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. It is commonly grown as an annual in cooler climates and as a perennial in frost-free areas, where it can flower almost year-round under favourable conditions.
Catharanthus roseus is well known for its historical and scientific significance in medicinal research, as it contains naturally occurring alkaloids that have been studied extensively. However, all parts of the plant are considered toxic if ingested and should be handled with care, particularly around children and pets.
Common Name: Bright Eyes; Cape Periwinkle; Graveyard Plant; Old Maid; Pink Periwinkle; Rose Periwinkle
Germination Tips: To germinate Catharanthus roseus seed, sow at anytime of year in well-draining soil, covering with a thin layer of mix. Keep moist, but not wet, at between 22-26 degrees Celsius for best results. Seeds typically germinate within 1 to 2 weeks, although some may take very much longer so remain patient. Once seedlings appear, gradually introduce brighter light and good airflow. Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
