Description

Rubus rosifolius, commonly known as Roseleaf Bramble or Australian Native Raspberry, produces small, bright red berries with a sweet, lightly tart flavour reminiscent of cultivated raspberries. While smaller in size, the fruit is rich in flavour and ideal for fresh eating, jams, desserts, and preserves, making it a rewarding addition to the home garden.

Rubus rosifolius follows a biennial growth habit, with first-year canes producing foliage only, flowering and fruiting in their second year before naturally dying back. It spreads by rhizomes, forming attractive, productive clumps.

Highly adaptable, this species tolerates tropical shade, coastal conditions, and mild temperate climates. It is easy to grow, visually appealing, and well suited to edible gardens, food forests, and ornamental plantings. Selected fruiting forms are cultivated worldwide, and the plant has a long history of use as both a food and traditional resource.

Common Name: Mauritius Raspberry; Thimbleberry; Vanuatu Raspberry; Bramble of the Cape

Germination Tips: To germinate Rubus rosifolius seed provide cold stratification (around 3°C for a month), then sow fresh in well-draining, humus-rich soil in late spring/summer, keeping them moist and in good light for best results. The hard seed coat often requires this chilling period to break dormancy.
