Description
Adansonia digitata, commonly known as African Baobab, is native to Africa. This tree is the predominant feature of the Savannah landscape and is said to reveal the presence of a watercourse from afar.
They can grow up to 5-25m in height with a trunk diameter of 10-14m. Their growth rate is determined by ground water or rainfall, and their maximum age, can be in the order of 1,500 years. All baobab trees are deciduous, losing their leaves in the dry season, and remains leafless for nine months of the year. They produce very large, heavy, white flowers in early Summer and their fruits are large, egg-shaped capsules which are filled with pulp that dries, hardens, and falls to pieces which look like chunks of powdery, dry bread, the dry fruit is edible.

Germination Tips: To germinate Adansonia digitata seeds they require scarification. Place in boiled water, and allow to soak overnight. The swollen seed can then be sown, and seeds that have not swollen can be re-treated. Sow the seeds 10mm deep and keep them moist but not too wet, or they will rot. Germination should occur in 10-21 days with a soil temperature of 18-30°C
