Description

Acacia acuminata, narrow phyllode variant, is a species of Acacia native to Australia and grows as a tall shrub or small tree. In ideal conditions it may grow to a height of 10m, but more commonly averages 3-7m.

This is a tree with linear to narrowly elliptic green to bluish-green phyllodes. The flowers, which bloom near the ends of the branches, are golden yellow, rod shaped and about 2.5 cm long.

Acacia acuminata contains psychoactive compounds such as dimethyltryptamine (DMT), making it of interest to researchers for its potential psychoactive properties.

Endemic to Western Australia, it occurs throughout the south west of the State and is common in the Wheatbelt. It is well-adapted to arid and semi-arid climates, making it a resilient addition to gardens and landscapes in regions with similar environmental conditions.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Acacia acuminata’s are a hardy tree that prefers well-drained soils, from sandy to loamy or gravelly types. It tolerates poor, rocky, and slightly alkaline soils but does not like waterlogged conditions.. It prefers full sun but will handle part shade, and tolerates drought, salt and frosts. They do not tolerate humidity well.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape or remove any dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy cutting into old wood, as new growth may not return quickly.

Pests and Diseases: Acacia acuminata is generally pest-resistant and low-maintenance. Occasionally, borers or scale insects may appear, but healthy plants rarely suffer serious damage. Ensure good airflow and avoid overwatering to prevent root or fungal issues.

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.

Fertiliser: We recommend and use Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. We also stock an Australian Made liquid indoor fertiliser The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food which is easy to use and odourless.
