Description

Griffonia simplicifolia is a is a woody, climbing shrub native to West and Central Africa. It grows to about 3 metres, and bears greenish flowers followed by black pods. It is known for its seeds that contain a compound called 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan). This compound is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite.

The seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia have been used in traditional medicine for their potential therapeutic effects, particularly in promoting relaxation and supporting mood balance. They are also sometimes used as a dietary supplement to increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Griffonia simplicifolia is a tropical species so water when the top soil fells dry. Best to reduce water in cooler months though. This species loves high humidity, try to keep it around 50% or more. Mist occasionally, or use a humidity tray or humidifier. It does not tolerate cold temperatures or frosts. It prefers 18–29°C and is best to position in bright, indirect sunlight.

Use a rich, well-draining soil with high organic matter.

Pruning: Light pruning to shape the plant and remove dead leaves is fine, this can also encourage bushier growth.

Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like aphids, mealybugs and spider mites. Griffonia is very susceptible to both, watch for leaf curling (mites) and leaves falling off (small shelled looking insects). Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
