Description

Argyreia nervosa, commonly known as Hawaiian Baby Woodrose or HBWR, is a flowering perennial climbing vine native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It features large heart-shaped leaves, pink-purple flowers followed by a rose shaped dry capsule.

Argyreia nervosa prefers sub-tropical to tropical conditions, moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. As this is a vigorous vine a climbing frame, trellis or wall will be required.

In Ayurvedic medicine, every part of the plant including the seed, leaf, bark and root have usage as they possess a broad-range of pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial, antidiarrhoeal, hepatoprotective, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, aphrodisiac, immunomodulatory, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. Traditionally used in Hawaii for religious and sacramental purposes. Learn more about HBWR here

Approx. 9 seeds per gram.

Germination Tips: Scarification is required to germinate Argyreia nervosa seeds. You can nick the seed on the opposite side of the “eye” and additionally soak the seeds in warm water for approximately 24 hours after scarification.

Alternatively, which is the method we use and find is more than adequate, is simply the soak the seeds in warm water until swollen, which is approximately 24 hours. Then cover the swollen seeds lightly with media and place in a warm position. Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks.
