Mansoa alliacea, commonly known as garlic vine, is a tropical plant renowned for its garlic-like smell. It belongs to the Bignoniaceae family and is popular for its attractive flowers and potential medicinal uses.
Mansoa alliacea is an evergreen climbing plant native to tropical South America, where it grows wild in the tropical rain forests of Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, the Guianas and in Costa Rica. It is especially abundant in the forests near the Amazon, Ucayali and in the Peruvian Amazon.
Medicinal & Spiritual Uses.
The entire plant, roots, stems and leaves are used in herbal medicine systems in Peru and Brazil. It is considered analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and antipyretic. Both the bark and the leaves are used in tinctures and decoctions. In addition, the leaves are also used as a common remedy for coughs, colds, flu and pneumonia and as a mosquito and snakes repellent.
In some regions, the leaves are used to add a garlic flavour to food without the pungency of actual garlic. Similar to garlic, it contains sulfur compounds that are believed to contribute to its medicinal properties.
Its medicinal properties are barely known outside its motherland, where it is playing significant role in traditional healing and modern herbalism. Ajos Sacha is a plant that is used in spiritual rituals of Amazonian tribes.
It is often used to cleanse the blood and body, bring both physical and mental well being, to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. For this purpose it is often burned in houses.

Ideal Growing Conditions.
Mansoa alliacea thrives in warm, humid climates and can be grown in gardens or as a houseplant in cooler climates. It is a hardy plant that is relatively easy to care for. Â It prefers full sun to partial shade and free draining soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant. Regular watering is required. The plant needs support for climbing
Pruning: Mansoa alliacea benefits from regular pruning to control its size, maintain shape, and encourage abundant flowering. Prune after the main flowering period to maintain a neat appearance and prevent excessive growth.
Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like aphids, scale or spider mites. Mansoa alliacea is generally a hardy, low-maintenance climber with relatively few serious pest problems. Its garlic-scented foliage may help deter some browsing animals and insects, although it is not completely pest-free. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil
Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.
We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
