Description
Mansoa alliacea, commonly known as garlic vine, is considered analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and antipyretic. The entire plant, roots, stems and leaves are used in herbal medicine systems in Peru and Brazil. Both the bark and the leaves are used in tinctures and decoctions. In addition, the leaves are also used as a common remedy for coughs, colds, flu and pneumonia and as a mosquito and snakes repellent.
In some regions, Garlic Vine leaves are used to add a garlic flavour to food without the pungency of actual garlic. Similar to garlic, it contains sulfur compounds that are believed to contribute to its medicinal properties.
Its medicinal properties are barely known outside its motherland, where it is playing significant role in traditional healing and modern herbalism. Ajos Sacha is a plant that is used in spiritual rituals of Amazonian tribes.
It is often taken before Ayahuasca ritual – to cleanse the blood and body, bring both physical and mental well being, to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. For this purpose it is often burned in houses.
How to Brew Mansoa alliacea (Ajos Sacha; Garlic Vine) Tea
Heat water to a boil. Use 1-2 Garlic Vine leaves for each cup of water. Pour the water over the tea, cover and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes. Strain and serve.
