Description
Lobelia inflata, also known as Indian tobacco, is a medicinal plant native to North America. Lobelia inflata is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant growing to 15–100 cm in height. It prefers well draining, slightly sandy or loamy soils, and moist moderate temperature conditions.
It has been traditionally used by Indigenous peoples and herbalists for its respiratory and muscle-relaxant properties. The active compound, lobeline, is known to affect the nervous system and has been used to support lung health, help with asthma, bronchitis, and even assist in smoking cessation.
However, Lobelia inflata is a potent herb and can be toxic in high doses. Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and, in extreme cases, more serious reactions. Because of this, it should be used with caution and preferably under the guidance of a healthcare professional. The root is toxic and can be fatal if eaten.
Common name: Puke Weed
Germination Tips: Lobelia seeds need light to germinate, so just sprinkle them on the surface. Do NOT bury the seeds. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the surface. You want it moist but not soggy. Provide a warm environment of around 18-24°C, use a heat mat if required. Germination can take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks.
