Description

Verbascum thapsus, commonly known as Mullein, is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa; widely naturalized in North America. It is typically biennial (sometimes perennial), forming a rosette of large, fuzzy leaves in the first year and a tall flower stalk in the second year.

Its flowers are spikes of small, yellow (sometimes white, purple, or pink) flowers that bloom sequentially from the bottom up. Mature plants can reach up to 2 metres in height.

Mullein has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for respiratory and skin ailments. It helps reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and skin and contains compounds that may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi. It is also used for soothing earaches when prepared as an infused oil.

Traditionally, Mullein has been used to treat coughs, colds, bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. It acts as an expectorant, helping to loosen mucus and ease breathing. The mucilage soothes throat and lung irritation. Mullein may also help ease inflammation in the digestive tract, alleviating mild discomfort or irritation.

Germination Tips: To germinate Mullein seeds sow on the surface and keep moist until germination. Seeds should germinate in around 10-14 days at a soil temperature of 18-24°C.
