Description
Hyoscyamus niger, known as Black Henbane, is a toxic, herbaceous plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, but has spread to many other parts of the world. Black henbane has a long history of use in traditional medicine, magic, and even as a poison, but it is dangerous due to its high levels of toxic alkaloids.
Hyoscyamus niger is an annual or biennial plant that can grow up to 0.3–1 metre in height. In the first year, it produces a rosette of basal leaves, and in the second year, it develops a tall, branching flowering stalk.
The leaves are large, oval-shaped, and covered in sticky hairs. They are typically grey-green, with irregular lobes and a foul odour. The plant produces pale yellow or greenish flowers with purple or dark veins. The flowers are tubular, with five fused petals forming a bell shape. The blooms appear from late spring to summer.
The fruit is a capsule that contains numerous small, dark seeds. These seeds are highly toxic. Henbane has a distinctive, unpleasant smell, described as rancid or nauseating.
