Description
Abrus precatorius, also known as Jequirity Bean, is a small vine with delicate leaves and pink flowers. People use its seeds for crafting prayer beads, jewellery, and percussion instruments.
Traditionally, Abrus precatorius has medicinal uses such as treating tetanus and preventing rabies. Traditional medicine practices use the seeds for treating animal-induced wounds, while the herb’s leaves are used to treat fever, coughs, and colds.
Despite its poisonous nature, the toxicity of Jequirity Bean seeds can be neutralised by subjecting them to high temperatures, which denatures the protein toxin. This process involves boiling the seeds in milk and subsequently drying them.
For optimal growth, Abrus precatorius vines thrive in well-drained soil and require full sun exposure. Once established, they are tolerant to dry conditions and benefit from support provided by a climbing frame or nearby tree.
Approx. 13 seeds per gram.
Common Name: Crab’s Eye; Rosary Pea; Precatory Pea or Bean; John Crow Bead; Indian Licorice; Akar Saga; Gidee Gidee; Jumbie Bead.
Germination Tips: Seeds need to be scarified for germination. Research has shown the highest rate of germination is achieved by then treating seeds with concentrated acid (H2SO4) for 120 minutes, also treated with hot water just before sowing.
Warning: The seeds are highly toxic – Ingestion of a single seed, well chewed, can be fatal to both adults and children.
