Description
Native to South Africa, Silene undulata, known as African Dream Root, is an attractive perennial herb growing up to 60cm in height and producing white flowers that opens at night and closes in the day.
Silene undulata is regarded by the Xhosa people as a sacred plant. Traditional uses include using its root to induce vivid, lucid dreams during the initiation process of shamans.
The active compound in Silene undulata is believed to be triterpenoid saponins, specifically the compound oneirogen, which is thought to enhance dream recall and promote more vivid dreaming experiences. The plant is often prepared as a tea or chewed before bedtime to facilitate these dream states.
