Acacia obtusifolia (Blunt Leaf Wattle) Plant

Description

Acacia obtusifolia, commonly known as Blunt Leaf Wattle, is an upright or spreading perennial tree. It grows from 1.5 to 8 metres in height and is a native to Australia. Tryptamine alkaloids have been reported in the bark and phyllodes of this native Australian species.

Acacia obtusifolia usually flowers from December through February. Some populations of Acacia obtusifolia can survive winters to -6C and possibly a light snow, however plants from populations in areas that are frost free such as the coastal ranges of Northern NSW are susceptible to cold and will be killed by frosts lower than 3C.

They are similar to Acacia phlebophylla which also possesses red resinous phyllode margins, but which differs from A. obtusifolia in normally shorter, broader phyllodes and generally shorter peduncles. Acacia obtusifolia fruits very rarely and appears to propagate principally by suckering.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Acacia obtusifolia’s are drought-tolerant, hardy, and low-maintenance, making it suitable for both urban gardens and rural plantings. It prefers well-drained soils and full sun but can adapt to a range of soil types. It can tolerate light shade, but reduced light may cause slower growth or fewer blooms. Avoid overwatering, especially in winter, as this can cause root rot.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape or remove any dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy cutting into old wood, as new growth may not return quickly.

Pests and Diseases: Acacia obtusifolia’s are generally pest and disease resistant. Occasionally, you may see sap-sucking insects, like aphids or scale, which can be controlled with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
