Description
Acacia multispicata, commonly known as Spiked Wattle, is a shrub native to Australia. It is naturally found in the Wheatbelt, Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance regions of Western Australia. The range of the shrub extends from around Northampton in the north down to around Cranbrook in the south. It extends eastwards as far as to just south west of Coolgardie and the Frank Hann National Park where it is usually situated on sand-plains as a part of heathland or scrubland communities.
The low spreading to erect multi-branched shrub typically grows to a height of 0.2 to 2.5m. It flowers from March to October producing a showy effect of a mass of yellow flowers. The plant prefers sandy soils.
It is part of the Acacia multispicata group which also includes the closely related Acacia sessilispica and Acacia singula. The specific epithet is derived from the Latin words multi meaning many and spicata meaning spiked in reference to the large number of inflorescences that cover the shrub when it is in bloom.
Common name: A Dalwallinu Wattle
Germination Tips: To increase the germination rate you should treat the seed first. Soaked in hot water or the seed can be nicked or scarred. This will allow water to penetrate the seed’s hard coating and induce germination. Use a sandy free draining soil mix and place in a warm area.
