Description

A peruvianus cross of Trichocereus peruvianus ROSEI #1 x Trichocereus peruvianus TA 01. A seed cross from Australian breeder Adam Noble.

Trichocereus peruvianus Rosei #1

Rosei #1 is an Australian clone originating from Fields Cactus Collection in Victoria. Rosei#1 has much shorter spines than Rosei#2 and is often bluer, however the difference is minimal and because the environment can have a huge influence on the look of a plant this is not a reliable identification tool. The name Rosei was used in very old cactus literature to label a certain, very blue type of T. peruvianus / E. peruviana.

It was obviously in use when Fields received the cuttings and the name Rosei is still used by his son. Both clones are part of the Fields collection and came to Australia in the early days of cactus trading. Mr. Fields was one of the supporters of Harry Blossfeld’s South America expedition and got the plants as reward for the support. SAB forum member PD played an important part in making the Rosei clones available to the Trich community.

Trichocereus peruvianus TA 01

TA 01 is Rodni Kisar’s first named clone. The name is the initials of his nursery Trichocereus Australia. TA 01 is the first of many new clones Rodni has bred and named after Trichocereus Australia.

Rodni has explained the background of TA 01 as “While going through an old message I realized that I messed up the initial name for this clone. The name that I had on this plant originally was T. peruvianus ‘Shamans Garden’ which I thought was right till I received a ‘Shamans Garden’ clone from a forum member that was quite different. Upon further investigation I realized that this clone was grown from seed collected from a shaman’s garden in Peru, hence why I had that name on it. I’ve decided to name it T. peruvianus ‘TA 01’.”

Germination Tips: To germinate Trichocereus peruvianus ‘Rosei #1’ x Trichocereus peruvianus ‘TA 01’ seeds it is best to use a container with drainage holes. Takeaway containers work well with holes punctured in them. Layer with high quality potting mix and top layer with zeolite – layers of 2 cm each is fine. Sow seeds on top of the moist zeolite, do not cover seeds.

Place this container into a sealed, larger clear container with water in its base. Prop up the seed container, so it isn’t sitting in the water. The humid environment you create with containers will keep the seeds moist from then on. Place lid on and do not remove. Do not water again until re-potting is needed. Removing the lid will destroy the humid environment you are trying to create.
