A hybrid cactus cross of Trichocereus J2 x Trichocereus peruvianus SHARXX BLUE. A seed cross from Australian breeder Adam Noble.

A hybrid is formed when crossing two genetically different species with each other. Most hybrids are manmade however some are natural.

With cross pollination the mother plant is the first name, and the father plant is the second. The mother is the plant whose flower was pollenated, and the fruit ripens on, and the father is the pollen donor. When the crossing plants, in most cases, the resulting offspring comes closer to the mother than to the father.

However, there are a lot of exceptions to this and sometimes, the genes of the father are simply more dominant.

 

Trichocereus J2

J2 is a unknown species seedling that originated at the Cactus Country Nursery, Strathmerton, VIC. It is now a popular Australian clone. The Js are name after and stand for the first name of the Nursery’s owner Jim Hall. J2s parentage is unknown but it is said to be a Trichocereus pach hybrid. As we have found it’s green body and small spines greatly likens itself to a pach we would agree with this phenotype.

 

Trichocereus peruvianus Sharxx Blue

Sharxx Blue is an Australian clone originating from the Dawson’s Cactus Collection. It was distributed and named by SAB forum member PD after another SAB member Sharxx. It is a fat growing, short spined peruvianus that is always extremely blue and glaucous. It is highly likely a peruvianus from Matucana as it is very like the known Icaro DNA, the Los Gentiles, and the Rosei’s.

Germination Tips: To germinate Trichocereus J2 x Trichocereus peruvianus Sharxx Blue Hybrid Cactus Cross seeds it is best to use a container with drainage holes. Takeaway containers work well with holes punctured in them. Layer with high quality potting mix and top layer with zeolite – layers of 2 cm each is fine. Sow seeds on top of the moist zeolite, do not cover seeds.

Place this container into a sealed, larger clear container with water in its base. Prop up the seed container, so it isn’t sitting in the water. The humid environment you create with containers will keep the seeds moist from then on. Place lid on and do not remove. Do not water again until re-potting is needed. Removing the lid will destroy the humid environment you are trying to create.
