Description
Scutellaria lateriflora, known as Skullcap, is a perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to North America. It grows 30-80 cm tall in a clumping form. It produces small, tubular, bluish-purple flowers that grow along one side of the stem in late Spring to Summer. Skullcap prefers rich, damp soils in an open, sunny position. It is frost resistant but drought tender.
Skullcap has been used for more than 200 years. It is used as a mild relaxant and as a therapy for anxiety, nervous tension, and convulsions. It has significant antioxidant effects, which may help protect against neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety, and depression.
Skullcap has also been used as an alternative medicine to help reduce inflammation and provide relief from spasms. It has also been used to stimulate blood flow in the pelvic region, help eliminate headaches, and reduce fever. Compounds such as baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin are believed to contribute to its therapeutic effects.
Common Name: American skullcap; Blue Skullcap.
Germination Tips: Germination of Skullcap seeds can be improved by a cold stratification period of about 4-6 weeks. Place seeds in a sealed plastic bag with moist vermiculite or sand, then refrigerate (not freeze). Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, covering them very lightly with soil. Skullcap seeds require light to germinate so ensure they are placed in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight. Germination should occur within 7-30 days with a maintained temperature of between 15-21°C
