Melissa officinalis, commonly known as Lemon Balm, is frequently used as an herbal tea. It is reputed to have antibacterial and antiviral properties and is also used as a mild sedative. This calming herb produces a pleasing, mild lemon-flavoured tea.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Lemon Balm was used to promote sleep, and reduce stress and anxiety. It has also been used to improve appetite, ease pain and discomfort from indigestion, alleviate flatulence and bloating. As well as enhance mood and cognitive function.

A popular bedtime herbal tea blend combines Lemon Balm and Valerian, which may help relieve restlessness and sleep disorders, such as insomnia.

 

How to Brew Lemon Balm Tea

Heat water to a boil. Use 1 to 2 heaped tsp of Lemon Balm dried herb for each cup of water. Pour the water over the tea, cover and leave to infuse for 3-5 minutes. Strain, add your preferred sweetener and serve.
