Ipomoea tricolor var. ‘Heavenly Blue’ plants belongs to the Ipomoea genus, which includes many species of flowering plants commonly known as morning glories. ‘Heavenly Blue’ is a specific variety of morning glory, known for its striking deep blue flowers.

The Ipomoea tricolor var. ‘Heavenly Blue’ plant variety is typically a fast-growing annual vine. It can reach heights of up to 3.5 metres when provided with suitable support, such as a trellis or fence.

Also known as Morning Glory, this attractive annual vine has blue flowers and has traditionally been used as a Mexican medicine and ritual drug. Morning glory seeds contain alkaloids that can be toxic if ingested in large quantities, so they should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Note: Commonly known as Ipomoea violacea, however violacea is an incorrect species name and is not a recognised synonym.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Ipomoea tricolor var. ‘Heavenly Blue’ plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, preferring warm climates. In cooler regions, they are often grown as annuals or started indoors before being transplanted outdoors after the last frost.

Pruning: Ipomoea tricolor ‘Heavenly Blue’ is a fast-growing annual climbing vine that requires minimal pruning but benefits from occasional trimming to keep growth tidy and encourage branching. Pinch out the growing tips of young plants to encourage bushier growth and more flowering stems.

Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like caterpillars, aphids or spider mites. Ipomoea tricolor ‘Heavenly Blue’ is generally a vigorous and resilient vine, but it can occasionally be affected by a range of common garden pests. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
