Description
Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly known as Licorice or Liquorice, is a perennial herb native to Southern Europe and parts of Asia. It’s well-known for its sweet-tasting roots, which have been used for centuries in various cultures for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and typically grows up to 1 to 1.5 metres in height. The roots are the most valued part of the plant.
G. glabra prefers warm, temperate, and subtropical climates. It grows best in areas with hot summers and mild winters. It needs full sun, at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Partial shade is tolerated but may reduce growth and root production.
It requires moderate watering – keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Liquorice is drought-tolerant once established, but young plants need regular watering.
Liquorice Root has traditionally been used in Western herbal medicine to maintain general health and wellbeing. It has been used to support gastrointestinal system health, relieve mild gastrointestinal tract inflammation, and soothe irritated tissues.
The root has also traditionally been used to loosen and clear respiratory tract mucous, soothe respiratory tract mucous membranes, and relieve coughs. Multiple studies have shown that liquorice root prevents and treats ulcers. It does this by increasing mucus production in the stomach, soothing the stomach lining.
