Description

Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis, known as Buddha’s Hand Citron, is a small to medium-sized tree or shrub with large, oblong, green leaves and white or purplish flowers. The fruit has an unusual shape resembling a hand with multiple elongated, finger-like segments.

The fruit’s intense lemon fragrance makes it popular for use in perfumes, potpourris, and as a natural air freshener.

Unlike other citrus fruits, Buddha’s hand has very little to no pulp or juice. Its fragrant zest and rind are used to flavour dishes, candies, and liqueurs. The zest can be added to salads, dressings, and marinades.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Buddha’s hand is used for its potential health benefits, including treating digestive issues, reducing inflammation, and as a tonic for the spleen and lungs.

In many cultures, especially in China and Japan, Buddha’s hand is considered a symbol of happiness, longevity, and good fortune. It is often used as an offering in religious ceremonies and as a decorative item during festive occasions.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis is intolerant to high temperatures and requires free draining soil. It prefers a full sun to partial shade position.

Pruning: Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis needs only moderate pruning compared with many fruit trees, but regular maintenance helps keep the plant healthy, productive, and manageable. Remove dead, weak, or crossing branches annually.

Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like scale, citrus leaf miner, mealybugs, aphids or spider mites. Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis is susceptible to many of the same pests and diseases that affect other citrus trees, though healthy plants are usually manageable with regular care. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
