Description

Casimiroa edulis, known as White Sapote, is a tropical fruit native to Mexico and Central America. The trees can grow up to 10 meters in height and produce fruit typically in the spring and summer months. They prefer tropical and subtropical climates with warm temperatures and well-drained soil. They can tolerate some degree of drought but prefer regular watering.

White sapote fruit are typically green when unripe and turn yellowish-green or pale yellow when ripe. The fruit is usually round or oval-shaped and ranges in size from that of a small apple to a large avocado. White sapotes have a sweet and creamy flavour with hints of peach, pear, and vanilla. The texture is often compared to that of a ripe pear or peach.

White sapotes can be eaten fresh, either by cutting them in half and scooping out the flesh with a spoon or by peeling and slicing them. They can also be used in various culinary applications, such as smoothies, desserts, jams, and sauces.

White sapote fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and calcium. Like many fruits, black sapote is low in calories and contains beneficial nutrients. They are particularly high in vitamin C, which is essential for immune function and collagen production. Additionally, its fibre content can aid in digestion and promote feelings of fullness.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Casimiroa edulis prefers a sunny position but can tolerate some shade. Requires regular watering, and is drought intolerant. It is frost sensitive but can tolerate light frosts once established.

Pruning: Casimiroa edulis benefits from regular pruning to control size, improve structure, and encourage easier harvesting. Left unpruned, it can become a very large tree.

Pests and Diseases: Casimiroa edulis is usually fairly hardy and trouble-free, but it can experience a few common fruit tree pests, especially in warm or humid climates. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
