Description
Alchemilla vulgaris, commonly known as lady’s mantle, is a herbaceous perennial plant native to Europe and Asia. It’s well-known for its distinctive leaves that are round and slightly scalloped. Lady’s mantle typically grows to about 30-50 cm in height. Its leaves are deeply lobed and hairy, forming a dense basal rosette.
The plant produces small, yellow-green flowers in dense clusters during the summer months. It is a popular plant valued for its medicinal values, attractive foliage and ability to thrive in shady, moist conditions. It’s often used in borders, rock gardens, and as ground cover.
Historically, Alchemilla vulgaris has been used in herbal medicine, particularly in women’s health. It was believed to have medicinal properties aiding in menstrual disorders and childbirth recovery. The plant’s astringent properties made it a popular remedy for wounds, cuts, and bruises, helping to stop bleeding and speed up healing. Ladies Mantle was also used to relieve digestive complaints such as diarrhoea and bloating due to its mild anti-inflammatory and astringent effects.
Germination Tips: To germinate Alchemilla vulgaris seeds sow seeds on top of the potting mix, they need light to germinate, so don’t cover them with soil. Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) and ensure good airflow to prevent damping-off. Germination may take 2–6 weeks at a temperature of around 18–21°C.
Optional (Not essential but can be helpful): Cold Stratify for 3–4 weeks – Place seeds in a sealed plastic bag with moist vermiculite or sand, then refrigerate (not freeze).
