Description
Petalostylis labicheoides, also known as Butterfly Bush, is an erect, semi-deciduous shrub that grows to 1 to 3m in height. A native Australian plant, this hardy species is found in dune fields, creek beds, rocky ridges and sand plains. Can become partially deciduous in the winter and is not long lived.
Butterfly Bush prefers full sun positions, and is drought tolerant. A highly attractive medium rounded shrub, it’s flowers occur in Spring, producing broad winged, bright yellow flowers with a prominent red central pattern. It has a long flowering period and responds well to pruning. It can be developed as hedge.
Petalostylis labicheoides is reported to contain N,N-dimethyltryptamine, N-methyltryptamine, tetrahydroharman and tryptamine. All these compounds were found in the seeds and leaves.

Germination Tips: To increase the germination rate, the seed should be treated first. It can be soaked in hot water or the seed can be nicked or scarred so that water will penetrate the seed’s hard coating and induce germination. Use a sandy free draining soil mix and place in a warm area.
