Description
Acacia maidenii, known as Maiden’s Wattle, is a fast-growing tree native to the eastern parts of Australia, especially in New South Wales and Queensland. This plant typically grows to a height of 5-20 metres in an erect or spreading tree form. The phyllodes (leaf-like structures) of this species are long, narrow, and curved.
Acacia maidenii produces creamy-yellow, fluffy flower spikes, usually in summer and early autumn. The bark is smooth when young, becoming rough and grey with age. It prefers full sun to partial shade and it is often found on the edge of the rainforest. It frost tolerant but not drought tolerant.
Like most Acacia species, Acacia maidenii is valued for its ability to stabilize soil due to its extensive root system, making it useful in land rehabilitation and erosion prevention. In Australian ecosystems, it plays a role in providing habitat and food for various native wildlife species.
Acacia maidenii has been studied for the alkaloids in its bark and leaves, including tryptamines, which are of interest in ethnobotany and phytochemistry.
Approx. 130 seeds per gram.
Germination Tips: To increase the germination rate you should treat the seed first. Soaked in hot water or the seed can be nicked or scarred. This will allow water to penetrate the seed’s hard coating and induce germination. Use a sandy free draining soil mix and place in a warm area.
