A hybrid cactus cross of Trichocereus terscheckii DAWSONS SHORT SPINE x Trichocereus J1. A seed cross from Australian breeder Rodni Kisar.
A hybrid is formed when crossing two genetically different species with each other. Most hybrids are manmade however some are natural.
With cross pollination the mother plant is the first name, and the father plant is the second. The mother is the plant whose flower was pollenated, and the fruit ripens on, and the father is the pollen donor. When the crossing plants, in most cases, the resulting offspring comes closer to the mother than to the father.
However, there are a lot of exceptions to this and sometimes, the genes of the father are simply more dominant.
Trichocereus terschechii Dawsons Short Spine
This short spined terscheckii originated from Dawson’s Cactus Garden, Bendigo VIC. This is the short spined form of terscheckii.
T. terscheckii initially grows as a single, columnar cactus that are fat for their small size. As the plant matures, it grows numerous arms and takes on a tree-like appearance. T. terscheckii can reach a height of 10-15m and up to 60cm in diameter. Rib count can be 8-15 and spines can be near non-existent to up to 10cm long.

Trichocereus J1
J1 is an Australian clone originating from the Cactus Country Nursery, Strathmerton, VIC. The Js are name after and stand for the first name of the Nursery’s owner Jim Hall. According to Jim, the J1 clone was originally collected from a nearby farmhouse that had a small collection of large, old cacti. The area then underwent renovation, eliminating the cactus collection.
J1 is said to be a Trichocereus peruvianus hybrid. It looks like a typical peruvianus and if another species was involved in its parentage, then it is not obvious in the phenotype. Whatever its parentage, it’s an underrated cactus in our opinion that has been a reliable and consist parent in breeding programs.

Germination Tips: To germinate Trichocereus J2 x Trichocereus peruvianus Sharxx Blue Hybrid Cactus Cross seeds it is best to use a container with drainage holes. Takeaway containers work well with holes punctured in them. Layer with high quality potting mix and top layer with zeolite – layers of 2 cm each is fine. Sow seeds on top of the moist zeolite, do not cover seeds.
Place this container into a sealed, larger clear container with water in its base. Prop up the seed container, so it isn’t sitting in the water. The humid environment you create with containers will keep the seeds moist from then on. Place lid on and do not remove. Do not water again until re-potting is needed. Removing the lid will destroy the humid environment you are trying to create.
