Description
Sceletium emarcidum, commonly known as Kougoed, is a fascinating succulent species native to the dry regions of South Africa. A succulent groundcover that produces showy white flowers with thread-like petals. It has been used to enhance mood and cause relaxation.
Like other members of the Sceletium genus, it is adapted to arid environments and develops fleshy, water-storing leaves that allow it to tolerate periods of dryness. The compact, low-growing habit and distinctive succulent foliage make it an interesting addition to specialist succulent and ethnobotanical collections.
Best grown in a sunny, warm position in very well-drained, gritty or sandy soil. Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings, particularly during cooler periods, as excessive moisture can lead to root problems. Protect from frost and prolonged wet conditions. With the right conditions, Sceletium emarcidum makes an attractive and unusual specimen for collectors of South African succulents and botanically interesting plants.

Ideal Growing Conditions.
Sceletium emarcidum prefers a free draining soil in a sunny to partial shade position. Is drought tolerant but does not tolerate humidity well or roots kept in moist conditions.
Pruning: Trim back any leggy or dead growth to encourage bushier growth.
Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like scale. Sceletium’s are susceptible to scale, treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil
Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.
We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
