Papaver somniferum ‘Ballarat Cottage Red’, an Ornamental Opium & Seed-Oil Poppy.

Papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium poppy, is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae. It is an annual herbaceous plant with large, showy flowers that can range in colour from white to pink, red, or purple.

This is an unknown variety, it is defined by a descriptor name only which comes simply from the seed collected origin and the flowers colour. The seed was collected from a Ballarat Cottage Garden.

The flower is as pictured, a red to maroon flower with dark maroon centres.
