Description

Murraya koenigii, known as Curry Tree or Sweet Neem Leaf, produces an aromatic leaf often used in Indian cuisine. Native to Indian this tropical to sub-tropical small tree can grow up to 4–6m in height with a trunk up to 40cm diameter.

Its leaves are used in many dishes in Indian subcontinent. Often used in curries, the leaves are generally called by the name Curry Leaves, although also called Sweet Neem Leaves in most Indian languages. This is opposed to ordinary neem leaves which are very bitter.

The leaves have also found their way in many holistic treatments like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and traditional Chinese treatments. They are used for their medicinal properties in treating diabetes, diarrhoea, gastro and intestinal disorders. A paste made from the dried grounded leaves have anti-helminthic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, which are potent against various infections and skin disorders.

  • Common Name.

Karuveppilai; Sweet Neem; Kadi Patta; Curry Vepila.

  • Specifications.

50mm Pot Size
Seed Grown Plant

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Murraya koenigii prefers full sun (6-8 hours daily). Can tolerate partial shade but grows slower. It thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates. Keep temperatures above 10°C. In colder climates, grow in pots and bring indoors in winter. Water daily in hot weather, keep the soil moist but not soggy. Reduce watering in winter.

Pruning: Murraya koenigii benefits from regular pruning to encourage bushy growth, increase leaf production, and maintain a manageable size. Since the leaves are the primary harvestable part of the plant, pruning can significantly improve productivity.

Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like scale, mealybugs, aphids or spider mites. Murraya koenigii is generally a hardy and productive plant, but it can be affected by several common garden pests, particularly in warm climates and when grown in containers. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.

Fertiliser:

Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser

The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food
