Description
Heimia salicifolia, known as Sun Opener, is a deciduous, tropical shrub that grows up to 3 metres in height, it produces a mass of small yellow flowers. Heimia salicifolia prefers well-drained soils in dry and hot climates, and does best in a sunny position. It is drought resistant, but frost tender.
Heimia salicifolia is an important plant for the traditional inhabitants of the highlands of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, Mexico. Indigenous to Mexico, and cultivated in most of South America. The plant contains several alkaloids, including lyfoline, nesodine, and vertine (cryogenine). These compounds are thought to be responsible for its medicinal effects.
Sinicuichi tea is a tradition dating back to the Aztecs. The leaves were crushed, mixed with water and allowed to ferment for a few days, making a nice-tasting tea called Sinicuichi. The effect of the Sinicuichi tea was euphoria and a brightening/yellowing of vision, hence the name Sun Opener. More information on Heimia salicifolia medicinal values can be found here
