Description

Eucalyptus pulverulenta, known as Silver-Leaved Mountain Gum, is an Australian native growing to 5-10 metres as a tall shrub to small tree, it can also form a mallee.

It is a rare species in the wild, only occurring in a few locations naturally, solely in NSW, near Lithgow and Bathurst in NSW, with a few records also from near Tallong and Moss Vale in the southern highlands, then found randomly east of Bredbo and Cooma and west of Bombala. It is a listed threatened species in the wild.

Eucalyptus pulverulenta grows in grassy woodlands on moderately infertile soils (rocky and sandy). It has smooth, greenish to grey or brown bark, sometimes hanging in short ribbons. The crown of the tree has almost exclusively juvenile leaves that are egg-shaped to round or heart-shaped, glaucous, and arranged in opposite pairs. Leaves, young stems and inflorescences have a powdery white bloom.

Indigenous people used the gum like a bandaid over wounds or burns. Eucalyptus pulverulenta gum can be soaked in warm water and applied to burns, sores and wounds due to it’s antiseptic properties. It is also thought to contain an antiviral element.

Germination Tips: Sow Eucalyptus pulverulenta seed in a seed-raising mix just below the surface. Soaking seeds for 24 hours can help soften the seed coat and encourage germination. Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed. Germination generally occurs in around 10-28 days.
