Description

Echinocactus grusonii, commonly known as the Golden Barrel Cactus, is one of the world’s most recognizable and widely cultivated cacti. Native to central Mexico, this striking species forms a near-perfect spherical shape adorned with prominent ribs and dense clusters of golden-yellow spines that create its distinctive appearance.

Growing slowly but steadily, Golden Barrel Cactus can eventually reach over 1 metre in diameter and develop into a magnificent specimen plant. Mature plants produce attractive yellow flowers around the crown during summer, although flowering is typically only seen on older, well-established specimens. Its architectural form and exceptional drought tolerance have made it a favourite for xeriscaping, rock gardens, container culture, and desert-themed landscapes worldwide.

Echinocactus grusonii thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, requiring minimal water once established. It is highly tolerant of heat and dry conditions but should be protected from prolonged frost. Due to habitat loss and the flooding of much of its natural range following dam construction, wild populations have declined significantly, making cultivated plants an important source for conservation and horticultural enjoyment.

Prized for its symmetrical form, low maintenance requirements, and dramatic visual impact, the Golden Barrel Cactus remains one of the most iconic and sought-after ornamental cacti for collectors and gardeners alike.

Common Name: Mother-in-Law’s Seat; Giant Barrel Cactus; Large Barrel Cactus; Golden Ball.

Germination Tips: To germinate Echinocactus grusonii Cactus seeds it is best to use a container with drainage holes. Takeaway containers work well with holes punctured in them. Layer with high quality potting mix and top layer with zeolite – layers of 2 cm each is fine. Sow seeds on top of the moist zeolite, do not cover seeds.

Place this container into a sealed, larger clear container with water in its base. Prop up the seed container, so it isn’t sitting in the water. The humid environment you create with containers will keep the seeds moist from then on. Place lid on and do not remove. Do not water again until re-potting is needed. Removing the lid will destroy the humid environment you are trying to create.
