Description
Banisteriopsis muricata, known as Red Ayahuasca, is a fast-growing vine native to Mexico to South America. It is a climbing shrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical climate. It is said to be very similar to Banisteriopsis caapi.
In its natural habitat, Banisteriopsis muricata vine grows 30-40m in length up trees and other plants for support. You will need to provide a strong support for your ayahuasca vine, or allow it to grow up a sturdy tree if your local climate is suitable for growing outdoors.
The name ayahuasca means “vine of the soul” in Quechuan, the shamans of the indigenous Western Amazonian tribes use the plant in religious and healing ceremonies. In Peru, B. muricata is called ‘ayahuasca de los brujos’ or ‘ayahuasca of the sorcerers’.

Ideal Growing Conditions.
The Red Ayahuasca vine is a sub-tropical to tropical plant that prefers humid conditions and consistently moist, but free draining soil. However, with care, it can grow in colder climates by growing indoors or providing a microclimate. Requires a climbing frame.
Pruning: Light pruning is recommended to manage its size and encourage branching, especially when grown in pots or small spaces. Trim back any leggy or dead growth to promote healthy new growth.
Pests and Diseases: Banisteriopsis muricata are typically not prone to serious pest infestations, however monitor your plant for pests like aphids, scale or spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil
Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
Fertiliser: We recommend and use Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. We also stock an Australian Made liquid indoor fertiliser The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food which is easy to use and odourless
We cannot send plants to Western Australia & Tasmania due to restrictions.
We cannot ship this species Internationally.
We strongly recommended to select Express Post shipping for all plant orders to minimise the transit time.
