Description
Desmanthus illinoensis, commonly called Illinois bundleflower, prairie mimosa or prickleweed, is a perennial flowering plant native to the prairies and open woodlands of North America. Belonging to the legume family, it is recognised for its delicate fern-like foliage, fluffy white flower clusters, and long seed pods that resemble small bundles, giving rise to the common name “Illinois Bundleflower.” The leaves fold inward at night or during disturbance, a fascinating trait shared by several sensitive plant relatives.
This small perennial shrub grows to 1m in height with a 0.8 to 2m span, thriving in warm climates and prefers full sun with well-drained soil. Once established it is notably drought tolerant and can survive poor soils and harsh conditions. The plant produces attractive cream-coloured puffball flowers through the warmer months, which are highly appealing to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Desmanthus illinoensis dies back to a hardy rootstock in winter and reshoots again in spring.

Germination Tips: Desmanthus illinoensis seeds need scarification to germinate. Cover the seeds with hot water and let soak overnight or until they swell. Pick out those that did not swell and repeat process with them. Sow swollen seeds immediately in seeding mix, covering with two to three times their thickness. Do not overwater or allow to dry out and provide good drainage and bright light. Seeds should germinate within a few days with pre-treatment. Once germinated, do not overwater and keep humidity low or fungal problems are likely occur.
