Description
Bursera fagaroides, known as Fragrant Elephant Tree, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to Mexico. It can grow up to 4-8 metres tall with a swollen, peeling red-tinged papery barked trunk. This plant makes an excellent bonsai.
The leaves are compound, with 5-7 leaflets that are lanceolate to ovate in shape. They are arranged alternately on the stems. The leaves release a beautiful citrus aroma when crushed. The flowers are small and yellowish-green, blooming in clusters. They are typically dioecious, meaning individual trees are either male or female. The fruit is a small, drupe-like capsule that splits open to release seeds.
Bursera fagaroides is similar in appearance to the elephant tree (Bursera microphylla), but can be differentiated by its longer, narrower leaflets.

Bursera fagaroides typically grows in dry, tropical, and subtropical regions, often found in scrublands, deciduous forests, and rocky hillsides. It prefers full sun and will become dormant in colder weather.
