Description

Areca catechu, commonly known as betel nut or areca palm, is a tropical palm species whose seeds (betel nuts) are widely chewed for their stimulant effects. It is commonly found in South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of East Africa.

Areca catechu is a slender, tall palm growing up to 20 metres high with a smooth trunk. It has long, feathery green leaves and produces clusters of orange to red fruits, each containing a single betel nut (seed).

It is used in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for digestion and deworming.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Areca catechu thrives in warm, humid environments and performs best when conditions closely resemble its natural rainforest habitat. Young plants benefit from partial shade but mature palms prefer full sun for strong trunk development. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged conditions

Pruning: Areca catechu is a single-trunk palm and requires very minimal pruning. Simply remove dead or fully brown fronds

Pests and Diseases: Areca catechu are generally pest and disease resistant. Occasionally, you may see sap-sucking insects, like spider-mites, mealybugs or scale, which can be controlled with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.

Fertiliser: We recommend and use Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. We also stock an Australian Made liquid indoor fertiliser The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food which is easy to use and odourless
