Description

Agave victoriae-reginae subsp. victoriae-reginae is a striking and highly prized succulent native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico, particularly in the states of Coahuila and Nuevo León. Commonly known as Queen Victoria agave, this plant is admired for its symmetrical, compact rosette of thick, dark green leaves that are edged and patterned with distinctive white markings and end in a sharp black terminal spine.

Queen Victoria agave is slow-growing, forming dense, geometric rosettes up to 30 cm (12 in) wide. Its leaves are rigid, triangular, and marked with natural white striations, which appear almost painted on. They bloom once in its lifetime (monocarpic), typically after many years; produces a tall flowering stalk with yellowish or purplish flowers. The plant dies after flowering but may produce offsets (“pups”) at the base.

Agave victoriae-reginae is highly valued in xeriscaping, desert gardens, and as a container specimen due to its architectural form. It was named in honour of Queen Victoria of England, reflecting its regal appearance and rarity in the wild.

Germination Tips: To germinate Agave victoriae-reginae seeds it is best to use a container with drainage holes. Layer with high quality potting mix and top layer with zeolite – layers of 2 cm each is fine. Sow seeds on top of the moist zeolite, cover seeds with a thin layer. Place the container somewhere warm, but not exposed to direct sunlight. The temperature needed for Agave to germinate is 25°C and above.
