Description

Ocimum sanctum, commonly known as Tulsi and Holy Basil, is an aromatic member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to tropical and subtropical Asia. It is a short-lived perennial or subshrub that can reach around 1 metre in height, although it is often grown as an annual in cooler climates.

Tulsi is an attractive, highly aromatic plant with branching stems, serrated green leaves and small flowers borne on slender flowering spikes. Depending on the variety, stems and foliage can have green to purplish colouring. It is particularly valued as a traditional and culturally significant plant in South Asia.

It is a revered herb in Ayurvedic medicine, often called the “Queen of Herbs.” Native to India and Southeast Asia, Tulsi is highly valued for its spiritual, medicinal, and culinary applications. In Hindu culture, Tulsi is considered a sacred plant, associated with health, purity, and spiritual well-being.

Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to maintain a healthy appetite, ease indigestion, bloating, and support a healthy digestion. Tulsi is also thought to lower cholesterol and support cardiovascular function. It may support healthy blood sugar levels, making it helpful for individuals with diabetes.

Tulsi is said to help reduce inflammation and pain, potentially benefiting arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It is beneficial to respiratory health, used to alleviate coughs, colds, and asthma symptoms. Also boosting immunity due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Tulsi acts as an adaptogen, helping the body adapt to stress and promoting mental clarity.
