Description
Avena sativa, commonly known as Oat Straw, refers to the green stems and immature tops of the common oat plant harvested before the grain fully matures. Traditionally used as a nourishing herbal tonic, oat straw has long been valued in Western herbalism for its gentle supportive effects on the nervous system and overall wellbeing.
Rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, silica, and iron, oat straw is commonly prepared as a tea or infusion and consumed as a nutritive daily herbal drink. Many herbalists regard it as a restorative herb that may help support relaxation, healthy stress response, and nervous system balance, particularly during periods of fatigue, tension, or burnout.
Oat straw has a mild, earthy flavour with subtle grassy notes and blends well with herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm, peppermint, and nettle. It is frequently included in herbal wellness teas designed for calmness and nourishment.
Traditionally, oat straw has also been used externally in herbal baths and skin preparations. Oat-based preparations are well known for their soothing qualities and are often associated with skin comfort and hydration.
