Description

Artemisia absinthium, also known as Wormwood, is a perennial herb that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, it has been also naturalised in many other parts of the world.

Artemisia absinthium is a hardy perennial plant that grows up to 1.5 meters tall. It has silvery-green, deeply divided leaves and yellowish-green flowers that bloom in late summer. The plant is aromatic, with a strong, bitter scent. It is an effective natural insecticide & insect repellent.

Historically, wormwood has been used for various medicinal purposes, including treating digestive disorders, fevers, and parasitic infections. Wormwood is known for its bitter taste and is often used to stimulate appetite and improve digestion.

Wormwood contains several active compounds, including absinthin and thujone. Note, Thujone, can be toxic in high doses.

Wormwood is perhaps best known as the primary ingredient in absinthe, a highly alcoholic spirit that was popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Absinthe was associated with artistic and bohemian culture but was also controversial due to its potential health risks. It was banned in many countries but has since been legalized in most places with regulated thujone content.

Germination Tips: Sow Artemisia absinthium seeds just under the surface of a well-draining mix in a sunny spot, keeping them moist and warm at around 18−22∘C until they sprout in 10-14 days.
