Description
Phalaris aquatica cv. Australia, known as Bulbous Canary-Grass, is a perennial grass native to the Mediterranean region. The cultivar (cv.) Australia refers to a specific variety of this species that has been developed for use in Australian agriculture. Phalaris aquatica strains may be either more actively growing in the cooler or warmer months. The Australia cultivar is a semi winter dormant grass.
Phalaris aquatica is a tall, robust grass with deep roots, capable of reaching heights up to 1.5 meters. It has broad leaves and dense flower heads. The cultivar Australia is specifically bred to suit Australian conditions, it focuses on traits like drought resistance, tolerance to grazing, and high productivity.
Phalaris aquatica cv. Australia contains four groups of alkaloids with similar molecular structures and chemical properties, which makes their separation difficult. These four groups are tryptamines, gramines, tyramines, and β-carbolines.
This cultivar is well adapted to a wide range of soil types, including acidic and moderately saline soils. It is particularly suited to regions with a Mediterranean climate, characterized by wet winters and dry summers.
Common name: Harding grass
Germination Tips: Phalaris should be sowed just below the surface. Keep the soil moist, but not wet, and leave in a warm spot. Seeds should germinate in around 2-3 weeks. Water young plants regularly until established. Once mature, it’s drought-tolerant—water only during prolonged dry spells. Frost resistant. Prefers light, well drained soils in an open sunny position.
