Pennisetum alopecuroides (Fountain Grass) Seed

Price range: $4.90 through $12.90

Description

Pennisetum alopecuroides, commonly known as Fountain Grass, is a compact, clump-forming perennial ornamental grass valued for its graceful form, soft texture, and seasonal interest. This Australian native features fine, narrow, arching green leaves that form a dense, mounded habit, reaching approximately 60–90 cm high and 60–120 cm wide.

In late summer through autumn, elegant foxtail or bottlebrush-like flower spikes rise above the foliage. These soft, feathery blooms begin as creamy light green and mature to warm tan or burgundy tones, adding movement and visual appeal as they sway in the breeze. The foliage also develops attractive gold and copper hues in autumn, extending its ornamental value.

Fountain Grass performs best in full sun to part shade and well-drained to moist soils. It is drought tolerant once established, low maintenance, and bred for reliable performance in Australian conditions. Ideal for borders, mass plantings, feature planting, erosion control, or contemporary and native garden designs, this versatile grass brings texture, sound, and elegance to any landscape.

Note: plants may self-seed in favourable conditions.

Approx. 200 seeds per gram.

Common Name: Chinese Pennisetum; Chinese Fountaingrass; Dwarf Fountain Grass; Foxtail Fountain Grass; Swamp Foxtail Grass

Botanical Synonym: Cenchrus alopecuroides

Germination Tips: Sow Pennisetum alopecuroides seeds just under the surface of a well-draining mix in a sunny spot, keeping them moist and warm at around 15−20∘C until they sprout in 2-3 weeks. Sowing in spring or autumn indoors is ideal, but direct outdoor sowing is possible from spring.
