Description

Nymphaea caerulea, known as Blue Lily or Blue Lotus, dates back to ancient Egyptian times. Historically, Nymphaea caerulea held ceremonial and spiritual importance. Ancient texts and artwork suggest it was used in ritual contexts and valued for its symbolic and aromatic qualities.

Blue Lily is grown for its ornamental beauty, historical interest, and traditional ethnobotanical value. It is popular among water garden enthusiasts, collectors of sacred plants, and those interested in ancient cultures.

Traditionally, dried flowers were often steeped in wine or infused as part of traditional practices. Blue lily flower has been used in traditional medicine as a natural aphrodisiac, sleep aid, relaxation and anxiety reliever.

Technically called Blue Water Lily, Lotus is commonly confused for and misused for this species. The term Lotus has been used by us for customer searching purposes only. Lotus refers to Nelumbo spp.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Nymphaea caerulea grows from a rhizome anchored in submerged soil (heavy loam or aquatic planting media) and thrives in still or slow-moving freshwater. they prefer subtropical to tropical conditions; can be grown in warm temperate regions during summer. In cooler regions, growth slows or dies back in winter. Rhizomes should be protected from frost or overwintered indoors if grown in containers.

Pruning: Once blooms fade, cut the flower stem back to the base. This keeps the plant tidy and encourages further flowering. Old leaves naturally die back; removing them helps prevent decay in the water.

Pests and Diseases: Blue Lily is relatively pest-resistant, but occasional issues can include aphids, snails, beetle larvae or caterpillars. Avoid chemical pesticides in ponds — they can harm fish, frogs, and beneficial insects.

Soil: A half half mix of potting mix and peat moss id our recommendation. You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles.

Fertiliser: Avoid excessive fertiliser — aquatic fertiliser tablets placed near the rhizome are best if feeding is needed.
