Microseris walteri, commonly called Murnong or Yam Daisy, is a small perennial herb native to southeastern Australia. It was once an important staple food for Aboriginal peoples, producing sweet, tuberous roots.
This hardy perennial produces small, sweet tubers that can be harvested and roasted, and it also adds charm to the garden with its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers in spring.
Easy to grow in well-drained soil and full sun, Murnong thrives through the cooler months and naturally goes dormant in summer. It’s an excellent choice for bush tucker gardens, native landscaping, or anyone wanting to reconnect with Australia’s edible heritage.

Ideal Growing Conditions.
Microseris walteri prefers well-drained soils – sandy loam or loamy soils are best. Plants growing in full sun usually produce better tubers. Moderate water requirements – It likes consistent moisture in the growing season (autumn–spring). Tolerates light frosts. Naturally dies back and becomes dormant in summer → reduce or stop watering then to prevent rot. Allow plants to establish for at least a year before harvesting tubers.
Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like aphids. They often appear in spring for the Murnongs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil
Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.
We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
