Leonurus sibiricus (Marihuanilla) Plant

Description

Leonurus sibiricus, commonly known as Marihuanilla or Siberian Motherwort, is a tall annual herb or shrub reaching heights of 1.5 metres with a spread of 1 metre. Marihuanilla boasts an erect stem adorned with upward branches with dull green round leaves, measure about 10 centimetres in length and sport 3 to 7 lobes. The flowers, in hues of pink, are short tubular and sessile, forming clusters at the ends of stems.

Native to South Africa, marihuanilla  has been traditionally used as a smoking herb. Its dried herb and flowers are commonly smoked or processed into resin for smoking. Users often liken its effects to those of mild cannabis smoke.

In Chinese medicine, the entire plant finds application in alleviating menstrual pain and excessive bleeding. Similarly, in Mexico, a tea brewed from the leaves serves to induce menstruation.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Siberian Motherwort is a fast-growing and adaptable species that thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils. It readily self-seeds under favourable conditions. It displays resilience to drought but is susceptible to frost.

Pruning: Leonurus sibiricus is a fast-growing herb that requires only light pruning to maintain a tidy shape and encourage vigorous growth. As an annual or short-lived perennial, it generally does not require extensive maintenance.

Pests and Diseases: Leonurus sibiricus is generally a robust and relatively pest-resistant herb. As a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), its aromatic foliage helps deter many common garden pests, and serious infestations are uncommon.

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
