Description

Indigofera australis, commonly known as Australian Indigo, is a hardy, fast-growing shrub native to eastern and southern Australia. Found in open forests, woodlands and heathland, it is well adapted to a wide range of climates and soil types, making it an excellent choice for native gardens, revegetation projects and habitat plantings.

Growing to around 1–3 metres in height, Australian Indigo produces attractive grey-green pinnate foliage and masses of delicate pink to mauve pea-shaped flowers from late winter through spring. These nectar-rich blooms attract native bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, while the plant also serves as a host species for the caterpillars of several native butterfly species. After flowering, slender seed pods develop, maturing to release numerous small seeds.

As a member of the legume family (Fabaceae), Indigofera australis forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, helping to improve soil fertility and making it a valuable pioneer species in ecological restoration. Once established, it is drought tolerant, relatively frost hardy and requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soils.

Historically, Australian Indigo was one of several Indigofera species investigated as a potential natural source of indigo dye, although it has not been widely cultivated for this purpose. Today it is primarily valued as an attractive ornamental shrub, wildlife-friendly native plant and an important component of Australian bushland ecosystems.

Germination Tips: To germinate Indigofera australis, they firstly need scarification. Treat the seeds with boiling water, soak until they swell, and sow them shallowly (1-2 mm deep) in a warm, well-draining potting mix. Germination typically takes 10 to 28 days
