Description

Eugenia uniflora, commonly known as Surinam cherry, Pitanga, or Brazilian cherry, is a tropical to subtropical evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its distinctive ribbed fruit, ornamental appeal, and adaptability. Native to South America, it has become widely cultivated in warm climates around the world, including Australia.

This species typically grows between 2–6 metres tall, though it can be kept much smaller with pruning. It features glossy, aromatic green leaves that often emerge with a reddish tint. The plant produces small, white, star-like flowers followed by uniquely ribbed fruits that ripen from green to orange, red, or even deep maroon/black depending on the variety.

The flavour of the fruit varies—some are sweet and juicy, while others can have a resinous or slightly tart taste. The fruit of Eugenia uniflora is eaten fresh or used in jams, jellies, sauces, juices, desserts and preserves

In traditional South American use, the leaves have also been used in herbal preparations. Beyond its edible qualities, it is highly valued as a low-maintenance edible hedge and ornamental garden plant.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Eugenia uniflora is well suited to warm temperate, subtropical, and tropical climates. It performs well in many parts of coastal Australia. It requires full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil, but is tolerant of sandy or poorer soils. It is drought-tolerant once established and is frost-sensitive when young but more tolerant as it matures.

Pruning: Regular pinching or pruning encourages bushier growth and more flowering points. Can be heavily trimmed—very resilient and quick to regrow.

Pests and Diseases: Eugenia uniflora is generally hardy, but may occasionally be affected by pests like aphids, scale and fruit fly. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil and netting or early harvesting can help manage fruit fly.

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
