Dracaena draco (Dragon Tree) Plant

Description

Dracaena draco, known as Dragon Tree, is a subtropical tree-like plant in the genus Dracaena and is very popular landscaping plant. Native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira, and western Morocco, it is known for its distinctive appearance and long lifespan.

The dragon tree has long, sword-shaped leaves that grow in dense rosettes. The leaves are typically grey-green and can grow up to 60 cm long. The tree has a thick, stout trunk that can branch out into multiple stems. The bark is grey and becomes scaly with age. It can grow up to 10-12 metres tall.

Dracaena draco can live for hundreds of years. Some specimens are believed to be over a thousand years old. The dragon tree is a slow-growing plant, taking many years to reach full size.

Due to its striking appearance, the dragon tree is popular as an ornamental plant, especially in subtropical and tropical regions. The red resin of the tree, known as “dragon’s blood”. It has been used historically for various purposes, including dye, medicine, and varnish. Note this is not the true Dragons Blood which is Croton lechleri.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Dracaena draco thrives in subtropical climates, often found in rocky areas with well-draining soil. They prefer full sun or partial shade and can handle a range of soil types and climates, although free draining soil is essential to prevent root rot. They can tolerate some frost.

Pruning: None required. Remove any dead leaves

Pests and Diseases: Monitor your plant for pests like scale, mealybugs or spider mites. Dracaena draco is generally a tough, drought-tolerant plant with relatively few serious pest problems, especially when grown in well-drained conditions. Most issues occur from excess moisture, poor airflow or indoor cultivation. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage.

We recommend Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day for a fertiliser, which can be found in our store, however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
