Description

Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass, is a species of sedge belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is native to Africa, southern and central Europe (extending north to France and Austria), and southern Asia. This perennial plant typically grows to a height of 20-50 cm, although it can reach up to 140 cm. It has slender, triangular stems, narrow, grass-like leaves, and small, inconspicuous flowers.

In Ayurveda, Cyperus rotundus is extensively used to treat ailments such as diarrhea, diabetes, inflammation, malaria, and bowel disorders. Pharmacological studies have reported its neuroprotective, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, antiuropathogenic, and anticonvulsant properties. Modern alternative medicine also employs nutgrass for treating nausea, fever, inflammation, pain reduction, muscle relaxation, and various other disorders.

Nutgrass is known for its cooling properties and anti-inflammatory effects, which help soothe redness, breakouts, and inflamed skin. It is effective in treating severe skin conditions and is rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and flavonoids, all of which are beneficial for both skin and hair health.

Nutgrass thrives in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It prefers moist soil conditions but can adapt to various environments, making it a widespread and resilient weed.
